Our Staff

       The Kensington School Team

              "Helping Children Reach New Heights"

      The Kensington School takes great pride in their teachers and staff members, who dedicate their time, patience and knowledge to the development and growth of each child.

       Each staff member is certified in CPR and First Aid to ensure safety in each classroom. Ninety-five percent of our teachers have bachelor's degrees in education or child development related fields. All staff members are background checked by the Virginia State Police and Virginia Department of Social Services. Teachers are required to take yearly continuing education classes to meet training requirements set by state licensing. The Kensington School also requires staff to take additional training and classes to earn accreditation from VSQI (Virginia Star Quality Initiative). All of our staff have completed coursework in early childhood development and have tremendous experience working with children of all age groups.




RACHEL K. SALMON
OWNER
When Rachel's son, Andrew, was born, she was searching for a child care center that would provide part-time care at the infant ag
e-level. She wanted a place that felt like home and welcomed parents, creating a family atmosphere that would provide top notch care. With the help of her son's teacher, Kathryn Mirick and Rachel put their minds together. Larger classrooms, an art and music room, a library where parents and teachers could check out books, low student to teacher ratios, and a laundry service were just some of the ideas they dreamt up. Their dreams quickly became a reality as they created the ideal pre-school and child development center, The Kensington School. Rachel has a bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Management from Longwood University.





KATHRYN MIRICK
DIRECTOR
Kathry
n has worked alongside Rachel to create the ideal pre-school and child development center. Prior to The Kensington School, Kathryn held a Lead Teacher position for a private pre-school in Williamsburg. This gave her the opportunity to learn classroom management and interact with children and their families. She has many years of experience working with children from internships in college to babysitting and nannying positions. Kathryn received her bachelor's degree in Child Development with a minor in Sociology from Colby-Sawyer College.





TINA SCHWARZ
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Tina received her Bachelors of Arts in Elementary Education from the University of Koblenz, and her Master’s in education in Elementary Education from Teacher College Trier in Germany. She has an extensive background working with children of different age and developmental levels, as well as children with learning disabilities. Tina has over 4 years’ experience working as an elementary school teacher for grades 1-4 in Germany. After returning to the states, she joined the team at The Kensington School in May 2013, where she worked as a Lead Teacher in our 6-12 month old class. We welcomed Tina as Assistant Director in January 2015!






ROXANNE LOVELACE

Roxann
e joined The Kensington School in April 2011. She was faced with the ultimate dilemma when searching for a job that would allow her to work part-time while being able to continue a strong interactive relationship with her son, Nolan, who was just 4 months old at the time. Roxanne and Nolan came across The Kensington School and found the solution to all of their problems. Prior to her position as an Infant Teacher, Roxanne was the Assistant Director and Marketing Coordinator for the school and an Assistant Teacher in the 19 to 24 month old classroom. Roxanne has her bachelor's degree in Marketing Communications with a double minor in Business Administration and Business Management from Mary Baldwin College.



 

AMBER SMEAL

Amber began her career at The Kensington School in August 2014. Amber graduated from Shippensburg University with a degree in Elementary Education with a Early Childhood Certification. Amber gained her experience working with children while student teaching in an Early Head Start classroom. She is a member of the educational honor society Kappa Delta Pi, Bridge for Kids and SUEA, which allowed her to participate in community events that benefited educational services and activities for children.








ERICA JURGENSEN

Erica started at The Kensington School in January 2015! Erica received her Certified Nursing Assistant certificate from Riverside Regional Medical Center.  Erica has gained experience working with children as a private nanny and through babysitting her nieces and nephews. She also has experience working with children with physical and developmental disabilities.





KATYCE JONES

Katyce started working at The Kensington School as a flex teacher in May 2014. Her daughter, Joy, started in the 3 year old class at Kensington in May 2014. Katyce has worked in the Early Childhood field since 1999 at licensed child care facilities in Williamsburg. She has experience working with children as an assistant teacher, lead teacher, supervisor and assistant director for all infant ages and school aged children. Katyce has taken courses from Thomas Nelson Community College to pursue here degree in Early Childhood.
 





RAQUEL RIVERA
 
Raquel started at The Kensington School in July 2015. She has experience working with children as a certified  fitness trainer and nutrition coach. Raquel served in the Military for 8 years as a police patrolman before continuing her education in personal training. She has lots of experience babysitting young children and has a 7 year old daughter of her own.






AMANDA STERTZ


Amanda started at The Kensington School in August 2015. Amanda has her associates in Applied Science-Registered Nursing from J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. Amanda has experience working with children as a Sunday School teacher at her church and as a private nanny. She was also a volunteer in the after-school program at Norge Elementary.






DIANNE BACKER

Dianne has been teaching students from ages 6 weeks to 5 years at The Kensington School since she started in March 2011. She has been teaching ages 6 weeks to 24 months since 2012. She is the proud mother of her two children, Kyle and Holly. When her daughter reached the age of 6 weeks old, she enrolled both of her children in a similar school and child care center. Dianne's personal experience with her own children has made her quite experienced from the parent perspective of childcare. Over the past twenty years, Dianne has worked as a substitute teacher in Williamsburg-James City County elementary schools as well as Walsingham Academy. Dianne received her bachelor's degree in Accounting from University of Akron.





EMILY ROSS


Emily started working at The Kensington School as a flex teacher in June 2014. Emily has been an avid babysitter for over 10 years and received the opportunity as a a private nanny for 4 children in 2013. She prides herself in being a catalyst for imagination and creativity, which she is eager to share with all students at The Kensington School. Emily is pursuing her associate's in Science from Thomas Nelson Community College.




RACHAEL HUTH

Rachael has worked with all ages at The Kensington School since May 2013. Rachael assisted in the 16 month to 2.5 year old classrooms for over 3 months in the summer of 2013 before she returned back to college. She has worked with children through babysitting and volunteering. She has received her associate's degree in Arts and Sciences from Blue Ridge Community College and is currently attending Old Dominion University to pursue her degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Specialized Reading.





JACKIE ADAMS

Jackie started as a flex teacher at The Kensington School in September 2014. Prior to her current position, Jackie was a certified life guard and has babysat for many families in her home town. She has been an active volunteer at her local church since she was 12 and has continued to assist children of all ages in church school. She has a great passion for working with children and is continuing to pursue her dream of becoming an elementary school teacher. She is currently completing coursework towards her associate's in Teaching through Rappahannock Community College.





ERIKA GULLY

Erika has been teaching toddler age groups at The Kensington School since September 2011. She has been teaching the 2 year old age group since 2012. Prior to working at The Kensington School, Erika taught middle school band and worked at a "Romp n' Roll," an exercise program for children. Erika has received her bachelor's degree in Music Education from James Madison University.





JAMIE ALEJANDRE


Jamie has been working with the 2 year old age group at The Kensington School since November 2012. Prior to The Kensington School, Jamie worked with children of various ages as a preschool teacher and a caregiver. She is the proud mother of two daughters. Jamie has completed coursework in Early Childhood Development from Thomas Nelson Community College.




KORYN HARROD

Koryn started as a flex teacher at The Kensington School in September 2014. She comes to Kensington with tremendous knowledge, training and experience working with children. She was a teacher at Santa Fe College Child Development Center in Florida for over 2 years. While teaching in Florida, Koryn worked with infants, 12-18 month olds and preschool children. Koryn is currently pursing her associate's in Early Childhood Education from Santa Fe College.





KAY NORTON




BRITTANY PURDY

Brittany has been with The Kensington School since July 2012 and has worked with all age groups from 6 weeks to 5 years old. She has been teaching in the 3 year old classroom since January 2014. She is the proud mother of her young toddler son, Colton. Previously, Brittany worked as a 3 year old Assistant Teacher at a local preschool in Williamsburg and has been a nanny for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years old. She attended Hardin-Simmons University for a degree in English and is currently pursuing her degree in Human Services from Thomas Nelson Community College.







ANGELA JOHNSON


Mrs. Angela has been with The Kensington School since January 2011. She is the proud mother of three children, Samantha, Sara, and Spencer. Aside from Angela’s personal experience with her own children, she was given the amazing opportunity of running an at home daycare in Maine. Angela studied Marketing Communications with a double minor in History and English through the University of Maine.






SAMANTHA PIETROMONACO

Samantha started at The Kensington School in August 2015. Samantha has over 9 years experience working with children in an early childhood development setting.  She assisted in running and operating after school programs and summer camps in the Williamsburg area.


JANET LOGAN

Mrs. Janet has worked at The Kensington School since January 2011. She has a strong background with children from her personal experiences with her son, Todd, and as a substitute teacher in areas of Japan, a kindergarten Teacher's Assistant and as a Girl Scout Troop Co-Leader. Janet has earned her degree in Education from Germana Community College.




ANGELA OLSEN
FLEX TEACHER

Angela has been working at The Kensington School since January 2012. She is the proud mother of three children, Madison, Kennedy and Harrison. Aside from her personal experience with her own children, Angela has gained experience with children through nannying positions as well as selling children's merchandise at a local children's consignment store in Williamsburg. Angela received her associate's degree in General Studies from Blue Bell Community College.


EYRUN MAGNUSDOTTIR

Eyrun is a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) from The Akureyri Comprehensive College Department of Natural Science in Akureyri, Iceland. She had worked as a CNA at the hospital in Akureyri, her hometown in Iceland, for over 20 years. Eyrun has worked in all classrooms since she started at The Kensington School in January, 2014. She is the proud mother of three daughters and one son. Eyrun previously worked as a nanny for two infants in Williamsburg from 2010 to 2012 and has volunteered in her son's elementary school and sporting events.




CINDY JONES

Cindy started at The Kensington School as a flex teacher in September 2014. She is the proud mother of Rich and Kristen and has four grandchildren- 20months-7 years old, with one on the way! Cindy received her Bachelor's of Science in Nursing from Fitchburg State College in Massachusetts. After raising her children she returned to nursing in a Family Practice office for several years.






REBEKA JURGENSON

Rebeka started as a volunteer at The Kensnigton School in 2015. She has worked very hard to get to know all of our children and assist in all of our classrooms. Rebeka is now working as a flex teacher as she pursues her degree in Early Childhood Development.
